How to install an old version of macOS

Downgrading your Mac to an older version of macOS

Updating your Mac to a new version of macOS is easy and pretty much everyone has done that. But what if you need to switch back to an older version? Downgrading is usually possible and relatively simple but Apple doesn’t make it very easy.

Why would you downgrade?

There’s a lot of reason why you might want to switch back to an older version of macOS. New releases can sometimes be buggy, you might need a piece of software that isn’t supported on the latest version of macOS or sometimes you need to use external accessories that aren’t supported by latest versions. Or maybe you’re a software developer who needs to do testing and validating on older operating systems.

Here’s a quick tutorial on how to switch back to an older version of macOS. To download old version of macOS visit: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683

If you run into an error message saying “This copy of the “Install macOS” application is too old to be opened on this version of macOS”. you’ll need to create a bootable installer. See the instructions for creating a bootable installer here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372
