How to open applications using Rosetta

Here’s how you can run an Intel version of your apps on an Apple Silicon Mac.

Apple Silicon has been out for a while now and most applications have been updated and optimized for M1 (and M2 and M3) Macs. But if you run into a problem where the Apple Silicon version of your application is missing any functionality, you might want to open that application using Rosetta. This essentially forces native Apple Silicon applications to run as an Intel app.

The process is simple but somewhat hidden so here’s a quick tutorial on how to open applications using Rosetta.

Open applications using Rosetta

  • Navigate to your Applications folder
  • Choose the Application you want to launch using Rosetta and press Command + i or right click the application and select “Show info”
  • Under “General” check the “Open using Rosetta” box
  • Close the info window and launch the app
